On this day September 4, 1981, Simple Minds released their fourth studio album, Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call. Originally issued as a special double album, the companion releases captured the Scottish band’s transition from post punk into a more expansive blend of new wave, art rock, and electronic music. The albums featured songs including Love Song, The American, Sweat in Bullet, Theme for Great Cities, In Trance as Mission, and 70 Cities as Love Brings the Fall. They marked the beginning of a new creative direction that would soon propel the band to international success.
Produced by Steve Hillage, the recordings showcased a more atmospheric sound built around synthesizers, driving bass lines, and ambitious songwriting.
