On this day April 25, 1988, John Demjanjuk, a former Nazi guard, was sentenced to death in Israel for war crimes committed during World War II. Holocaust survivors in Israel identified him as the Treblinka extermination camp guard known as "Ivan the Terrible." Based on new evidence, Demjanjuk was released in 1993 by the Israeli Supreme Court, even though the judges agreed there was a sufficient amount of evidence against him.
