On this day March 16 1984 Dire Straits released their first live album Alchemy Live. Capturing the energy of their 1983 tour the album showcased the band’s musicianship with extended versions of their biggest songs.
Alchemy Live reached number 46 on the Billboard charts and hit number one in the Netherlands proving the band’s massive international appeal. Featuring classics like Sultans of Swing and Romeo and Juliet the album became a favorite among fans for its raw live sound and Mark Knopfler’s signature guitar work.
80s insight: Unlike many live albums Alchemy Live featured no overdubs preserving the authenticity of Dire Straits’ live performance.
