On This Day April 2 1987 – Nothing in Common Premiered on NBC

On this day April 2 1987 the TV adaptation of Nothing in Common premiered on NBC. Based on the 1986 film that starred Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason the series starred Todd Waring in the role of David Basner a young advertising executive balancing his career and complicated family life.

The show aimed to blend comedy and drama much like the film but struggled to connect with viewers. It ran for just 1 season with a total of 7 episodes before being pulled from the schedule. While short lived the series was part of NBC’s attempt to bring more film to television adaptations to prime time in the late 80s.

80s insight: Todd Waring also replaced Tom Hanks in another TV version of one of his films the short lived Splash series in 1988.
