On this day March 21 1986 the animated film GoBots Battle of the Rock Lords premiered in theaters. Directed by Ray Patterson the movie featured voice talents from Margot Kidder Roddy McDowall Michael Nouri and Telly Savalas.
Serving as a theatrical extension of the GoBots toy line and animated series the film introduced the Rock Lords a new faction of transforming robots made of living rock. The story followed the GoBots teaming up with the heroic Rock Lords to battle against the evil Magmar and his forces. Despite hopes of expanding the GoBots universe the film only earned 1.3 million at the box office struggling to compete with the popularity of Transformers.
80s insight: This was the only GoBots movie to be released in theaters as the franchise was overshadowed by Transformers which had its own animated film later that year.
